Fashionistas, thanks for joining me for this alphabet edition of my fashion haus 06.2020. It’s been a hot minute since I last opened my fashion haus. To be exact, April. When I shared this poppy edition. For today’s post, had to chase out the spiders with the broom then sweep out the spider webs before I could get in the door.
Want to share a couple of outfits today. Calling this the alphabet edition because I am sharing a GYPO summer capsule look and an SIA interpretation. The only thing missing is LMNOP.
So, enough with the alphabet soup, let’s get to the clothes!!

Summer 2020 Capsule Wardrobe Day 6
The first outfit is my interpretation of day 6 of the get Your Pretty On summer capsule wardrobe. With my annual membership to Alison’s style challenges and capsule wardrobes, I get access to shopping lists and outfit formulas that help me look put together for all four seasons of the year. As you already know, I love GYPO!!
The day 6 outfit formula was graphic top + olive bottoms + metallic shoes. Alison suggested we could dress up the look by wearing an olive skirt with a white button down and metallic heels. Or dress it down by swapping out the metallic sandals for tennies.
For my interpretation, I wore a Loft Outlet belted cargo skirt (exact, similar), which just happens to be on big time sale right now. Like practically free!!
Pulled out a Loft Outlet striped/floral print tee with 3/4 length sleeves (similar, similar).
Added my new Old Navy metallic slides (similar, similar) and my Miche camo bag (similar, similar).
I wore this for a real live dinner date to Kona Grill and then shopping at our upscale (by El Paso standards) outdoor shopping area The Fountains at Farrah.
While shopping at JCrew Factory, I scored a pair of bright floral shorts that are also on the summer capsule wardrobe shopping list. Regularly $59.00, I got them for $17.00!
Saved $41.65…boy, would my mom be proud of me.
SIA Interpretation of the Tripled Portrait
The second outfit is one I put together for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) interpretation with Salazar, Daenel and Kim. If you are unfamiliar with the SIA challenges, I think Kim explains them well.
Style Imitating Art challenges us to look to creating an outfit using art as an inspiration. In addition to colors, you may also want to look at textures, mood, genre and style. There are no “wrong” outfits and you don’t need to be literal.
I tend to get hung up on trying to do a literal interpretation rather than just having fun. Most often I am focus on trying to find something in my closet that is the exact colors in the art. One time I even went out to buy – yes, BUY – pieces for my SIA outfit…missing the point altogether. But not this time, baby.
Triple Portrait
Here’s the painting that Salazar chose for this edition of Style Imitating Art. It is entitled “Triple Portrait of Charles II” painted by Kehinde Wiley. Check out some of his other work, here.

My immediate reaction was, “Man, I need to find some silver in my closet!” But when I started looking beyond the literal…the shiny, I noticed the back ground, the blues and grays, the black and rich browns. The swirling vines, the flowers, fur epaulettes. So much more than just shininess!!
Here’s what I came up with.
My Interpretation
Started with my burnout velvet kimono. It’s floral print mimics the vines and flowers in the painting. And the colors worked, too – blue, black, silver on a gray background. The kimono has a a bit of sheen to it in some of the velvet.
For good measure, I added a little more silver with the sandals I chose.
The blue in my kimono (similar, similar) wasn’t exactly the same robin’s egg shade in the painting. Which bothered my OCD sensibilities a bit. But I pushed on. Choosing a medium blue or royal blue tee that more closely matched my kimono. Added some cool khaki-colored or maybe stone Loft Outlet chino shorts (exact, similar).
My selfie skills are suffering because I still don’t have the issue figured out with using my phone as a remote with my DSL. The program that connected my phone to my camera performed an upgrade and now the camera can’t find the phone. Going to play around with fixing things tomorrow. Tomorrow is always a good day for projects like that.
Asked Lauren to take a photo of me and she snapped the one below.
I think you can get a better feel for the print of the kimono in this photo. The way the lightweight, semi-sheer fabric moves reflects the swirling curly cues in the painting. Kind of proud of my ability to think beyond the shininess that was the first thing I noticed about this art.
Your Turn
What are you wearing this summer? Have you tried kimonos and shorts together? That has become one of my favorite looks this season. I don’t always feel 100% comfy wearing shorts out in public but decided this is the year that I rise above that self-consciousness. Adding a kimono gives me more confidence. Think security blanket!! If you haven’t given it a go, you might try it. Check out these great, affordable kimonos in a variety of colors and prints.

And if you would like to participate in the GYPO summer 2020 capsule wardrobe, please use my affiliate link to register. Oh, and see those floral shorts in the first panel in the graphic above? Yuppers, those are the ones I scored at JCrew.
Thank you for coming by for this alphabet edition of my fashion haus. Hope you have managed to stay well and are beginning to see your community waking up from this long Covid hibernation.
Hugs and kisses,
Nancy
I absolutely love that green skirt. What a perfect color!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, Nancy!! Green is the best color ever in my book!!
Lise
Two stylish outfits that I would definitely love to wear, and you do look good in shorts. Last few days wearing cropped light weight jeans and blouses. Having a blouses moment for the first time ever! Enjoying longer sleeves and stripes and graphic patterns on my button through blouses (both thrifted, in black and white mixes). Easy breezy! 🙂
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you!! Isn’t it nice to have a formula that works for you. I love cropped jeans, too. They are perfect for running errands and date night. I am often cold in the AC so need a light wrap like a kimono and prefer jeans to shorts.
Kellyann Rohr
I have been loving all the sales and JCrew Factory has had some great ones! Can’t wait to see your shorts! You have great legs my friend, love seeing them in your skirt and in your shorts and kimono. Show them off!!!
xo,
Kellyann
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you!! I have never been a JCrew shopper because they were out of my budget but their sales have been terrific this spring and summer.
Dara
That is such a cute skirt. I just got olive shorts but they are a little tight on me! I tried to pass them to Gabbie and she said they would be too baggy on her! I will have to stretch out the elastic!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you! Try those olive shorts on again. You are looking so slim. And maybe just having them on for a few minutes will make them more comfy. This skirt was tight when I bought it but I was pleased to see it had grown some during Covid! I can’t have lost weight. Ha!
Becky
You need to post more fashion. You are adorable!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Ha! Thank you, Becky. I don’t feel very comfortable featuring fashion posts because I feel like whatever I put together is not novel or exciting or the least bit haute couture!! I think maybe I should start each ‘fashion’ post with that disclaimer. But you are the sweetest thing to encourage me to do more fashion posts.
Juhli
Two lovely outfits that reflect your inspirations perfectly! And lucky you finding such a bargain. I’m not ready to eat out or shop in person for clothes yet but we are getting great take out meals occasionally and I’m starting to think about shopping online again. Need to up my outfit game for all my stay at home days.
Patricia Doyle
Leslie, every time you do a fashion haus post, I think about upping my daily look. I tend to wear basic T-shirts and shorts… noting cute about them either. As we move to a new climate, maybe I can up my cute-ness factor as I increase warm weather clothing!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Oh, Patricia, I hear you! Most days I am very happily and comfortably dressed in a form of tee shirt and jeans. This summer I have decided that I can wear shorts with the rest of ‘them.’ And have added them to the equation. I think that uniform is perfectly acceptable but we can always make it a little more exciting or fun by adding a great graphic tee, some interesting accessory, or mixing patterns.
Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom
Ahh! So happy you’re getting out of the house for dinner and shopping! I have not gone clothes shopping yet, but my mom watches the kids for me one day a week and Brian is going into the office for a meeting (for the first time since March), so I may hit the outlet mall! I love metallic shoes, I have a bunch! And, I love the olives in that outfit and that bright and cheerful kimono in your second outfit. I need to wear my kimonos more during the summer, I always forget to add them on. I get cold easily, so they’d be a nice bonus layer for me inside!

Kimonos are the perfect layer for summer, aren’t they? And they can take an outfit from plain Jane to more special.
Glad you have plans to get out and hit the outlet mall. I am so sad since our Loft Outlet closed that going to the mall
is not nearly as much fun as it used to be.
I was so glad to see you guys enjoying a winery date. Hope it was delightful. Even going to McDonald’s is a treat these days.
Kimberly F Malkiewicz
I like your outfits, Leslie! You look so cute in the skirt and I’m so glad you joined SIA! Blues not matching is more than fine. Oh, so glad you got out shopping and found some great sales, can’t wait to see what you found. Camera problems are such a hassle, hope you get if fixed tomorrow-ha!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Still need to get after my camera – before next week’s SIA!! Thank you, Kim.
Deb
Great outfits – you look lovely in them both. Those colours suit you so well!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, Deb!!
Donna Connolly
Great outfits, Leslie. The colors and styles suit you perfectly!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you!! Last time I had tried the skirt, it was snug and felt too short. I think I have somehow lost a little weight and possibly shrunk in height during this Covid business!!
Laura Bambrick
Your outfit with the green skirt is absolutely adorable! I love the one with the kimono too! You are rocking your summer wardrobe!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, friend. I have decided to get dressed in real clothes even if I am only going to baby sit my granddaughters. Have to put these clothes to use!
Jill
Good for you getting out and about! We haven’t really ventured out yet even though things have started to open up. I absolutely love the first outfit with the green skirt! And, your outfit for SIA is so pretty!
Jill – Doused in Pink
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, Jill. I was a little afraid to try on the olive skirt because it was snug and short last time I wore it!! I guess I have shrunk in both directions because it fit better this time.
jodie filogomo
I love how you interpreted the SIA. It’s amazing how different we can make our brain think from the same photo!!
XOXO

Yes, I love the SIA posts because they make stretch. Thank you.
Bri
You have THE cutest style!!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
You are so sweet!! Thank you!
Daenel T.
Those outfits are so cute. I’m happy you joined us for SIA. Your outfit is fun. Kimonos are the perfect third piece and outfit popper.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, friend. I have missed SIA and already have my outfit picked out for the next round.
Mica
Both such great outfits! I love that kimono, it’s really pretty with the blue top and that olive skirt will go with so much! 🙂
Hope that you are having a nice weekend 🙂
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, Mica. I think kimonos are one of my favorite things to wear. Probably have about 10 but would love one like the one you featured with the bright primary colored flowers. The colors in it were so bold and pure.
Gail
I love the green cargo skirt! It looks so cute on you with the top. I bought a very similar skirt but it’s not very flattering so I probably won’t be wearing it on the blog! The kimono is perfect for the SIA interpretation – works really well. Great to see you at #WowOnWednesday.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, friend!! Hoping to do a few more style posts than I usually do. I just don’t feel like much of fashion icon!! Ha!
