Fashionistas and artistas, bienvenue!
Welcome to my fashion haus. Joining Salazar at 14 Shades of Grey and Daenel at Living Outside the Stacks and Kim at Fierce Fashion for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) post. For this fun series, fashionistas and artistas (and wannabes of both, like me) are given a work of art, sculpture, painting, poster, fabric, even old medicine bottles, as a prompt. And then we are invited to create our own look that reflects the color, texture, mood of the curated piece.
I often get stuck focusing on color and forget to consider the other elements of the art. Thinking I did a little better about incorporating other things into my interpretation this week. Here’s today’s curated piece. What do you think?
Style Imitating Art: Personnages Aux Chevaux by Marcelle Cahn
I like the simplicity of the shapes in this painting. The stylized horses and people. Despite the shading, the subjects appear flat and 2 dimensional. And those colors! That burnt sienna and mahogany paired with the turquoise and sea foam green. They are the colors of the Franklin Mountains under a cloudless El Paso sky. Home.
Overthinking Things, As Usual
I explained in my comment on Kim’s interpretation that I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about this challenge. How sad is that? I cannot turn off my brain. Thought I would pair my scarf and sweater with a longer denim skirt. Then woke up this morning and realized I don’t have a longish denim skirt. What a rude disappointment. Back to the drawing board.
My Interpretation
Or the closet. Which is like a black hole, so dark it is hard for me tell what color my clothes are at times. I need a miner’s hat to go in there. The focal point of my outfit is my orange scarf with its gold spur print (similar, similar). It was a gift from my friend, Metra and is the perfect light weight accessory for spring.
Scarf
To go with the scarf, I chose a Dress Barn hooded cardigan in dark brown (similar, similar), a jewel-toned blue tee and then I got stuck. What color pants? I fished out several pairs of pants in shades of brown but settled on these mauve-y Loft Outlet denim jeans (similar, similar)
Boots
I love my Corral Women’s Circle G Crackle Scroll Bone Embroidered Western Boots – now, that’s a mouthful – (exact, similar) but don’t wear them enough! What better outfit, though, to pair them with than this one?
Cardigan and Tee
I have had this cardigan for years. Because I have my closet arranged in color order – a rack for tees and tops, a rack for blouses, a rack for sweaters and cardis and a rack for pants and jeans. My browns, grays and black pieces are at the end of each rack and don’t get seen = worn as much.
So, I kind of under wear (not to be confused with underwear) my brown, gray and black clothing. I like this sweater because it is lightweight but has a hood for chilly spring, summer and fall El Paso evenings.
I think a sea foam green tee shirt would have worked well but meant to wear my turquoise jewelry and thought this blue color would be best with my bling. And then I forgot to put on my bling. What in the world is going on with my brain??
Learning to Wave a My Wand
My daughter Brennyn gave me this curling wand for a just because gift this winter.
It has digital controls with a range of temperatures, comes with removable tips in 2 sizes, and a heat-protective glove. I have played around with it a little and did so for this look. Thinking these clips might help me work with just one section of hair at a time. Still need lots of practice but you can see some beachy-ish waves in the back and on my right side. Now to perfect them all over my head!
Your Turn
Kim has shared the interpretations of those of us who participated in this week’s Style Imitating Art challenge on her blog. Hope you will run by to see what the others put together. If you would like to join the fun, stop by to visit Daenel, Kim or Salazar on April 1, when the next curated piece will be announced.
I have so many end-of-the-month posts to get written. There’s Glossies Made Me Do It with Lauren and my own Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone, both on Sunday, 03.31. Then I want to blog about my progress with my word for the year, and share my goals for spring, probably on Saturday, 03.30 and Dear Date Night Diary. Need to squeeze it in. Running out of month!!
All that to say, thank you for stopping by today and hope you will run back by over the weekend. Thought this would be the week that I settled back into a routine but had 3 appointments about our pool (!) and continued concern for my mama and her health problems, and PC had a doctor appointment, too, that I tagged along for. Here’s to a productive end of the week!
Hugs and kisses,

I chuckled when I read you woke up in the middle of the night thinking about this! That is something I do, I swear it drives me nuts. I love how you pulled all of these pieces together and those boots are the cherry on top! The colors all work so well and you look so creative! I think these challenges are challenging in that they help you pull things out and pair them together that you otherwise my not have.
I have a curling wand and I need to use it more often. I get inpatient and end up burning my fingers!!
xo,
Kellyann
I love the cardigan and the scarf adds a great pop of color!
Wow, those boots! Love the way you have interpreted the colours in the artwork, that colour scarf really suits you and absolutely lifts all the other colours – very pretty!
I think you did a great job with this outfit! Not only does it echo the painting but it looks great on you.
This is one of my favourite SIA interpretations you’ve done – I love the orange and blue together, and they match the original perfectly! You’re looking good ma’am, very trim and your hair is a great length too!
You did a great job Leslie. Love the colors. Adore those boots! A true artist, for sure!
Thank you, my friend. I love my cowgirl boots, too. Don’t wear them enough. I guess with skinny jeans, they became harder to style. Need to get some of my boot cut denim out.
This art interpretation series is so fun! Your outfit is such a beautiful color combo! Love your boots!
Jill – Doused in Pink
Those boots are fabulous!! You did a great job interpreting the painting.
Your hair looks great! I can’t believe how long and full your hair is.
Thank you! It is all smoke and mirrors or the moon or something making my hair look full! Tis not full at all. In fact, my hairdresser mentioned that I am losing it…my hair, that is! I am sure it is stress related. But I so appreciate your sweet compliments. PC likes it long, so even if I only have two strands, at least they are going to be long.
These are always such fun posts! I took a lot of art history in college and I miss learning all of that knowledge (a lot of it has left my brain! ha!). I adore that scarf and the boots you have on… also the little glimpse into your home! Ha!

Love that you noticed the bits of my home in the photos!! I do that, too. I took a lot of art history in college, also. Ugh. Trying to keep up with artists and periods and dates. Now days I just know what I like but not what period it’s from or the name of the artist.
That’s an incredible interpretation! I love the colors!
Merci my friend!
Thank you, this SIA interpretation came easy. I often get stuck and can’t see anything beyond color.
This is such a fun post Leslie. How creative to style an outfit after art! I like the art you chose as well as the accessories you pulled from your dark closet to make it all come together. The organge scarf is so pretty!
