Fashionistas and clothes-wearing friends, thank you for popping in for Ageless Style 09.2021: Gem & Jewel Tones. Hope you will take a few minutes to check out their lovely gem colors.
AGELESS STYLE LINK UP
The Ageless Style Link Up is series that goes live on the third Thursday of the month. For each post one of the gals in the group selects a theme then all of us put together a look or looks reflecting it. Last month’s theme, ‘back to school,’ was chosen by lil ole me!! You can check out that post, here. I pretended to be a library administrator and shared a professional back to school look. Posed by the (University of Texas, El Paso) UTEP’s huge Miners’ pick. It was fun!!
Just a reminder: Once Upon a Time & Happily Ever After occasionally uses affiliate links which are usually italicized. If you click or make a purchase from an italicized link provided I may receive a very small commission at no cost to you. Thank you for your support.
AGELESS STYLE 09.2021
This month’s prompt, ‘gem colors’ was chosen by Mireille at Chez Mireille: Fashion Travel Mom. I wanted to confirm that what I considered to be gem or jewel colors were what the rest of the world considers to be gem colors. So I turned to Etsy where I found this jewel tone palette. Happy to report I was right on target.
Gem & Jewel Tones
And once I saw the ‘official’ jewel tones palette, I realized I have quite a bit of those colors in my closet. I would have thought that most of my clothes are earth tones but looking at these colors, my favorites: terra cotta, deep green, spicy reds and yellows are all here!! Who knew?? For today’s post, I chose to style my new Ouges skater dress from Amazon. A similar dress in ivory is one of the items in the Get Your Pretty On fall 2021 capsule wardrobe.

Here’s how I styled my jewel toned dress.
With A Little Leopard
For this look, I paired the dress with a Twilly ribbon scarf from Gibby’s Frillery and BCBG leopard d’Orsay heels. It was 94* so this was perfect for an early fall day. I really like the maroon – or garnet, since we are talking gem colors – with the leopard print.
With a Lotta Leopard
This whole lotta leopard kimono dresses things up, don’t you think? Added a big pearl statement necklace for fun and big pearl studs. My black pumps are from Kohls.
Before you grab the phone to call your optometrist, let me assure you the photo on the left is very blurry. I was having all kinds of technical difficulties with my camera today. Have been able to use my phone as a remote for my DSL in the past, but not today. So I was having to try to set up the photo, run push the shutter button and then dash back into place. In heels. Need to figure out what’s up with my camera. QUICK!!
Or With no Leopard At All
My friend Jodie from Jodie’s Touch of Style recently wrote this article about good and bad tops to wear with skirts. While this is a dress and not a skirt…that much I know…I think the denim jacket is cutting me in half in exactly the wrong place. Between my menopausal stomach and my child-bearing hips. And it’s boxy shape – the jacket’s – doesn’t allow you to see the more flattering lines of the dress. I have on blue suede shoes (like those of my homeboy Elvis) that are really kinda cute but I prefer the way the heels in the other 2 looks elongate my body. But how ’bout those jewel colors in my paisley scarf??
Does this outfit look any better below??
This was the outfit I originally planned to style. That was before I realized that the garnet color of my dress was truly a jewel tone. I thought this scarf would represent gem colors even if the dress didn’t. Looking at it now, I really don’t like it much. About to get rid of my scarves all together. They just don’t flatter my ‘ample bosom.’ Have purged most of them already – the heavier ones – except my blanket scarves which really aren’t flattering but I love anyway.
And note to self: don’t shove your hands into your pockets like an 8 year-old boy. Just put them into your pockets gracefully. Geez.
Last Looks
Maybe if the scarf didn’t have a strangle hold around my neck, it would look better. It really is a very light, gauzy scarf but it looks like a boa constrictor in this photo.
Maybe an infinity scarf would work better??
In the picture below, I was talking to my brother on speaker phone when the timer went off on my camera. Kind of explains the pained expression on my face…not that talking to my brother pains me by any means. But worrying about our mama sure does.
I do like the flattering fit of this dress!! And it is under $25!! The dress comes in a short and long sleeve version, in a combination of solid colors and prints. Please use my Amazon affiliate link to check it out.
Your Turn
Do you were jewel tones and gem colors? Have you ever had your colors done? One of the perks of having an annual membership to the Get Your Pretty On seasonal capsule wardrobes, is an affordable opportunity to have a color analysis done. I have never done this and probably have some idea what colors are my best already. Even so, I tend to wear colors I like…GREEN and PEACH…because they make me happy. Not because they necessarily look best on me. It might be fun to do the color analysis master class someday, though.
Hope you will join me in visiting the blogs of my fashionista friends to check out their looks for today’s prompt.

Have another Thankful Thursday post coming and an update to this year’s Wellness Journey. Hope to share my friend Leanne’s guest post Monday…you won’t want to miss that.
Thank you for spending a few minutes here with me. I appreciate YOU!!
Hugs and kisses,
Deb
I love that dress, and the colour suits you so well – I love it! I’ve never had my colours done, but I’m instinctively drawn to jewel tones.
Don’t throw those scarves away! Lots of ways to use them without drawing attention to any particular areas of your body 😉 https://helloglow.co/how-to-tie-a-scarf/ I use numbers 5 and 6 a lot!

Thank you for the scarf tying link. I will check it out. This dress was really a winner – especially for the price. I have a long sleeve version in my Amazon cart. As you suggested, I think it would be cute with tights and boots.

OOOOoooo!! Really like #5!! Going to play with my scarves and perfect some of these.

I love jewel tones and anytime you add leopard you have a win in my book! Isn’t Gibby’s the best? I love the size, they make it so easy to style. That is a great dress and you have shown so many cute ways to style it!

Thank you, sweet friend. The dress was a bargain and a very pleasant surprise.
Joanne
What a pretty dress! I love jewel tones and tend to have lots of the blue/green tones.
Amy Johnson
What a beautiful dress! I love the color. You styled it in so many creative ways. You also confirmed what I said in my post that with a solid colored dress, you have so many different styling options.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, friend. I usually tend to prefer clothing with prints but you are right, solid colors offer boundless options. I really liked your pretty garnet dress and the way you styled it with the kimono. Great minds!!
Nancy
You definitely picked the perfect dress for this theme. What a rich warm colour! I always like a denim jacket on a dress!
Veronica Lee
You look fantastic in that dress. I love the color.
Happy Thursday!

What a pretty dress! It’s a great color on you and so many styling possibilities! I have a number of denim jakets and my excuse for having more than one is that they are all different cuts and styles so some work better with certain outfits than others. My favorite one is probably my light denim one but my colorful ones are cool too. Oh I cannot wait for it to cool off to wear them. I haven’t really worn many scarves this past year or so: I have about 3-4 light ones that I really love, 3 heavier ones and the others I probably should just donate.

Hi Leslie!
I LOVe this plum color on you! I also love jewel tones and even more when I watched Mad Men and saw them on Joan ( with my hair). The style of the dress is so lovely on you and I am all about the more leopard the merrier, so bravo! The longer kimono looks great too and I love that you changed up the jewelry. I have some of the scarves from Gibys and that is one I reach for often. Hope you are doing well!

I never thought much about the color theme in my closet. I guess it’s a lot of black and white except for my t-shirts that I exercise in that are every color imaginable. I love the thought of “jewel tones” and like the way you mixed and matched your outfit with the dress. You look stunning. The plum and teals are my favorites in the palette.

I love jewel tones and that dress is very cute!
Jodie
Oh, Leslie, I just adore how you experimented with this dress in all kinds of ways!!
I will say that I don’t think the denim jacket is bad at all. Especially since you left it open, and have that column of color down the front. Just like I was saying to Mireille, sometimes I think we get too critical of ourselves!!
And I will echo that don’t throw out the scarves. Most times I think we just need to practice styling them to make them work for us. They really are magical pieces!!!! (Even with an ample bosom–trust me, I’m a DD, and still wear them).

Thank you for the kind words and encouragement. I have tossed (given away) a number of scarves but kept the lightweight ones and will continue to play with styling them. You made me feel better about the dress paired with the denim jacket. I have a darker denim jacket, too. Could try it maybe?? I just feel less than confident when I team up with all of you Ageless Style fashionistas!!

That dress paired with the animal print is absolutely gorgeous. Love love love the color.
