HaPpY hUmP dAy, ya’ll!
Welcome to Wellness Wednesday, 01.2018. This is the first edition in a monthly series created by my friend Natalie who blogs at Natalie the Explorer. With the beginning of a shiny new year most of us gals have a renewed commitment to eating more nutritiously and getting more exercise. But wellness isn’t limited to having a healthy body.
Dictionary.com defines wellness like this:
wellness [wel-nis] noun
- the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.
- an approach to healthcare that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life, as opposed to emphasizing treating diseases.
I like both definitions. The first one because it mentions wellness of the mind, and the intentional aspect of pursuing wellness. It’s a choice we make to work on being well. The idea of preventing illness and prolonging life through wellness appeals to me in the second definition. Especially with my 60th birthday looming on the horizon. Today’s interest in wellness is the modern day equivalent to the preventive benefits found in the spoon of the cod liver oil my dad had to take everyday as a boy. But a whole lot more enjoyable.
Wellness Goals 2018
You’ve probably heard Ben Franklin’s axiom “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. That Ben was ahead of his time! He was talking about wellness before wellness was even cool. Ha! Here are the preventive measures, the deliberate efforts I am resolving to try this year in order to achieve wellness and peace of mind, body and spirit.
Exercise
- Exercise 4X a week (treadmill, biking, hiking, swimming)
- Lift weights 2X a week
- Walk at least 7,000 steps a day and 3 stories
Diet
- Be more mindful of Weight Watchers points
- Cook dinner 5X a week (Tasty Tuesday on the blog once a month)
- Drink half my weight in water
- Enjoy an adult beverage 1-2X a week
- Make Saturday my dessert/treat day
Staying Well
- Apply sunscreen to my face every single day
- Conduct breast self exams and skin exams more regularly
- Floss
- Seek peace
Mental Wellness
- Read one adult and one children’s book a month (Title Talk on the blog once a month)
- Work puzzles
- Write
Spiritual Wellness
- Devotional time (Spiritual Sundays on the blog once a month)
- Gratitude journal before bed
- Miracle Morning
Relationship Wellness
- Do something fun together once a week
- Spice up the love life
- Unplug by 9 pm
Your Turn

Or if you are a blogger, link-up a related post for Wellness Wednesday, 01.2018. Then you are cordially invited to check out the posts of all of the gals linking up today. My friend Sue at Sizzling Toward Sixty has chosen THRIVE as her word of the year like I have chosen PEACE. Come back to see how we incorporate our words into our wellness goals.
Be sure to join us for our next Wellness Wednesday on February 7, 2018. We will be sharing our favorite cardio exercises or tips, and updating our progress on our goals. Grab your agenda and write down these dates for the whole series.
Thank you, dear ones, for your support as we begin this new year together. And thank you for cheering me on.
Hugs and kisses,
Rebecca Jo
You have all the goals covered. This is going to be a great year of accountability

I hope this is a year of accountability and great results. Here we go!!

Wow…great goals! You have a very healthy plan for the year.
Mine are not very postworthy…but yours are quite inspiring and will definitely start me thinking about making some small changes.
Yay, you!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, sugar foot! Think about joining us for Wellness Wednesday in February. We are going to be sharing cardio tips. I can’t think of a single one! But will try to come up with something between now and then.

I have some similar wellness goals for 2018…well, mine aren’t nearly as specific but wellness in general lol

These are all great! I just got a water pik flosser and I love it and it really does so much better than regular floss!! I decided to put running on the back burner this winter/fall and instead of doing my usual half marathon training, I’m doing Cathe’s 12 week STS program! It is a lot of weights, so this will be SO new for me! Brian is also doing it with me, so we’ve been working out in the morning together. Then, I still plan to run 2x a week, but just 3 miles each time (which is a lot less for me!). I have been good about always putting sunscreen on my face… I hope it well help! Lol!

Really excellent goals to have this year my friend. Looking forward to reading about your journey. 🙂 Happy new Year!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, Sarah. I can write goals all day long but now to achieve them!! And I was craving pizza and beer tonight. Heaven help me.
Natalie
A great and well-rounded list of wellness goals! Thank you, Leslie, for participating in the link-up, and promoting it. I look forward to following your progress.

So glad to be a help with your wellness series. I like setting goals but fulfilling them is the real challenge. Tonight I wanted pizza and a cold beer and didn’t want to go to the gym. Yikes. Need to do better tomorrow.

Lots in common here Leslie so we can keep each other on track. I love the idea of reading a children’s book and totally agree that health is not just about body but mind and spirit as well. Have a great month of wellness and look forward to seeing how we are tracking next month.

You are such an inspiration to me with all of your exercise and your enviable Saturday sisters. Hope I can just become more faithful to eating better and exercising more and the rest will fall into place. Signed up for another 5K tonight. Yay!!

Love your goals – especially re the adult beverage…or bevvie as we’d call it here in Aus. I also love the thought you’ve given to your relationship & spiritual wellness. We’ve got this!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
I really don’t drink that much but had begun drinking not in celebration but to relax. I think I need to have better, healthier ways to unwind. Used to relax with a soak in the tub. Need to try that again.
The bucket list activities I plan have really been good for our relationship. We have broken out of our same old weekend routine and that has helped to rekindle the spark. I love that our church has a Saturday evening service so we incorporate that into our date night. Killing two birds with one stone!

Before I fall asleep, each night I ask myself just one question. It’s NOT what did I accomplish today, or what am I proud of myself for…..it’s a simple question: what am I grateful for today? The list is long and the blessings are many.
Right now, I’m home sick with the flu (despite all the precautions I take every.single.year…I still get sick!) and all I can think of is getting well. It takes me weeks to get better, provided I don’t get pneumonia (I’ve had it 4 times already and yes! I got the pneumonia shot!)
Wish me well.
Your goals are great!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Bless your heart, hope today was a little better than yesterday. Seems this flu season has been tough on a lot of folks because the flu shot didn’t protect against many of the strains being seen. I am feeling less than 100% tonight. My daughter was sniffling and sneezing during her visit last weekend so I think she left me a memento of her visit. Will take it easy again tomorrow, as should YOU, and hopefully we will both be feeling better by Saturday. Be well!!
Amber
Working puzzles is such a great goal! Puzzles are so relaxing!
I want to start Miracle Morning too. I keep letting the perfectionist in me stop me since I don’t have my affirmations or vision board together. I know that’s silly. Just do it, Amber! Looking forward to reading your update next month!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
I worked on my vision board via Dream it Alive http://www.dreamitalive.com/home.aspx and found affirmations at https://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-carmen-harra/affirmations_b_3527028.html and then began writing my own. Just work on these things while you are doing your Miracle Morning routine.
I semi-meditate/think/pray/dream while listening to Calm.com for the Silence part of Miracle Morning. Then affirmations, vision, exercise, reading and scribing. Check out my blog post. https://onceuponatimehappilyeverafter.com/spiritual-sunday-beginning-the-miracle-morning/ Shameless plug!!
Lysha
This is such a great reminder of things I need to be doing. It’s always so helpful for me to put it down in writing. I need to do write down some wellness goals for sure.
Lorena Manso
I should write them down too! It would help to keep things in focus and not become so overwhelmed.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Write down your wellness goals and stick them where you will see them. I have them on the frig. Along side my bucket list. Hope this week you get some good news. Keep me posted. XO
