Fashionistas, welcome!
The Get Your Pretty On spring 2019 capsule wardrobe challenge is into its second week. Thought this would be a good time to share my interpretations of a couple of the daily outfits. Follow me into my fashion haus for a peek at what I have been wearing.
Spring 2019 Capsule Wardrobe
When the shopping list came out, I was happy to discover that I had many of Alison’s suggested pieces. Some of the things I was missing were, for the most part, new trends…
- brightly striped tee
- graphic sweater
- button-fly high waist middle wash jeans
- side stripe denim
- chambray or denim shoes
- tortoise jewelry
Took full advantage of this situation to go shopping! Used the links Alison provided with the shopping list to help me find the items I was lacking.
Getting on Trend
Once the shopping list was released, I immediately started looking for a ‘vintage-look’ striped tee. Wouldn’t you know, I purged my only colorful striped tee early in the year, so dad gum it, I had to buy a new one! PC said my old striped tee looked like something my mom would wear. So, I donated it to Candlelighters. Not that there is a thing wrong with the way my mom dresses. Just not ready ready to dress like even the snappiest 92-year-old.
Found my brightly striped tee, here. My new graphic sweater is actually a graphic sweatshirt that I had designed by Lindsay at Simply September Shop on Etsy. So glad I bought these button-fly high waist jeans. Comfortable and stylish, with secret slimming pockets…my new best friend. Ordered these chambray flats online and picked them up at the store this week. Can’t wait to wear them.
Have a pair of tortoise earrings, but will be on the lookout for an inexpensive pair of tortoise shell sunnies. Maybe these on my Amazon wishlist. Not sure what I think about the side stripe denim trend; these are cute but not sure if this look is for me. Then again, that’s what I said about distressed denim and I have 3 pairs. Give me a minute and I’ll have some side stripes hanging in my closet.
My Take on Day 2
The formula for the second day of the challenge was olive jacket + colorful patterned top + medium wash jeans + white sneakers. Hey, wait…I could have used a colorful top in any pattern? Oh. Ooops. Well, now I have a new striped tee.
My olive jacket is very old from the first ever spring challenge in 2014. I bought it at Dress Barn and have worn the tail off it.
You might remember my recent post about going on a bra hunt. As you can see from the pic above, the perfect bra continues to elude me! What in the world? My breasts may not be symmetrical but they aren’t this far off!! I am positively whopper-jawed.
Colorful striped tee from Old Navy. It was on sale when I bought it and is even further reduced to $7 now. Two color choices available.
The ‘girls’ look like they are on the same plane in this photo. A little less scary. Medium wash relaxed cropped jeans from Loft Outlet.
White Converse sneakers from Rack Room.
I do have 2 feet and white sneakers on both even though you can’t tell that from this picture. Came back to add a link to a similarly unfortunate photo on Loft Outlet’s website! I am not the only one who looks to be missing limbs.
Looks like I also have some man-hands going on! Wore this to PC’s ball game on Saturday. It was perfect for my pre-game walk around the lake. Was able to take the jacket off mid-game. However, I was glad I had it when the wind picked up a bit.
My Take on Day 4
The formula for Day 4 of the spring 2019 capsule wardrobe was floral blouse + printed bottoms (skirt or pants or denim) + chambray shoes. I used pieces from my closet to create my version of this look.
My floral top is from Express.
Blush and white striped distressed denim from Loft Outlet.
Dream Pairs ballet flats from Amazon.
Finally, gifted bead necklace.
Yes, I am smiling. I like this look. Don’t tell Alison but I kind of made a face at the idea of mixing a floral top with a print bottom. But the stripes in these jeans are subtle. And from a distance in the skinny mirror, it ‘reads’ like a solid color. Wore this shopping and I will wear this outfit again.
Your Turn
Is there a trend you have tried this spring that had you stepping outside your style comfort zone? How do you feel about pattern mixing and striped tees? Have you tried the tortoise shell jewelry trend? You might check out these cute Penelope tortoise statement earrings from Alison & Aubrey.
Please let me know in a comment below (that rhymes!) what trends you are trying this spring. And if you have a trench, please let me know if it gets lots of wear or if I should just stick with my yellow raincoat.
Hugs and kisses,
Jamie Moore
I adore your GYPO looks! I’m bummed that I had to miss out on this season due to all my health issues. But I had to laugh out loud at your bra dilemma but only because I am right there with you!! If you find a great one please let me know!

Girl, these bras are killing me over here. Bought a new sports bra today that is more like a midriff or crop top. Hope it will be more comfy to workout in. Still looking for that perfect bra. Alison reviewed Soma bras but I ordered one and it had terrible wrinkles across both cups. Not a good look at all.
Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom
I really want to get some button fly jeans!! I’ve been seeing them everywhere. I have a pair of converse and just love them! That bright top with the utility jacket is such a nice, casual look! It’s been too long since I’ve been in an Express, that floral top is Spring perfect!

My sister and I had really good luck at an Express two years ago (when I bought this floral top). We were together at a library conference. Skipped the session and went shopping instead. You need a sister!!

Not gonna lie, I snickered at your bra comment. When I get dressed, I scoop and swoop my girls into place. They just seem to have a mind of their own and wanna go in opposite directions – I know this because they’re “eyes” are always looking everywhere but straight ahead. LOLOLOLOL
Both outfits are super cute!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Hahahaha! Their eyes!! I know that problem first hand. My daughters used to get so embarrassed because the eyes on my “girls” were always bugging out, if you get my drift. I need to remember to scoop and swoop rather than fasten and forget.
Deb
You can get jeans with secret slimming pockets? Why has no one told me this before?!
Both these outfits really suit you, you’re a good advert for GYPO!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Aw, thank you, Deb. I have enjoyed every single GYPO challenge.
Kellyann Rohr
You are such a fun writer Leslie! You do not have man hands but I am glad you have two feet! Ha! I like those striped pants from Loft Outlet – perfect for spring!
xo,
Kellyann
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thanks, Kellyann. Do you remember the man-hands episode on Seinfeld? I was the stand-in for man-hands. J/K but could have been. I love Loft Outlet. Do you have one near you or do you just shop Loft? I loved going there until the manager started calling me by the wrong name. It kind of made me feel weird. She would dash across the store and say “Hello, Ms. —Whateveritwas.” And then began commenting on different I looked from the last time she saw me. Ha! I bet!!
Dara
I really like the striped top and the floral top! You shouldn’t be so critical of yourself, the outfits look great!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, Dara. Not very self assured over here. I appreciate your support.
Nancy
Ha ha ha, the girls are on the same plane? What a fabulous expression. And the floral outfit is so springisch! I love flasks with stripes! Have a great day Leslie!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, Nancy. My ‘girls’ are all over the place. I need to pay more attention when I put on my bra. Ha!!
Laura
That second outfit is my fav! I love the more subtle pattern mixing with your striped bottoms. It looks really cute on you!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, Laura. I like the second outfit best, too. It is probably more me. But the tee and relaxed jeans sure are comf!
Nancy Dobbins
Hi Leslie!
Love the little flats. I totally believe in the concept of capsule wardrobe…wear what you love, what fits you well and works well with other pieces. Choose quality over quantity.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, Nancy. I probably have more quantity over quality but I wear all of it!! The Get Your Pretty On challenges have taken me from truly dreading to get dressed to being excited about all of my options. I love getting dressed now. If only someone would do my hair and makeup.
Laura
Great outfits, Leslie! You look super cute for spring! I hope it stays cool for a while longer in El Paso!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Well, we set a new record high on Tuesday. 92* already. I can do about any temp but just don’t like the wind that seems to be hanging around indefinitely. At least I don’t have to spend time on my hair. Not that I ever do. Thank you, sugar.
Em
You looks fabulous! Love the outfits! Hope you share ALL the days.
I bought a Loft trench last fall and I’ve definitely enjoyed wearing it. It’s prime for transitional weather and elevates my “uniform” of jeans and long sleeve striped t. Love my super casual anoraks but the trench makes me feel more put together on days that I’m not.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, Em. It has been fun to do the challenge. I am always happy to try the new trends and to freshen up my closet. I think I need to get a trench. It would look nicer with dresses – not that I wear them any more, but I imagine! And with dressier pants. Going to start looking for one…maybe a sale?
Jill
Your posts always make me smile! Both of these outfits are so cute! What a great deal on that ON tee! Love your striped pants!

Aww, glad I could make you smile! I love my striped blush and white pants, too. Was so glad I could zip them. And bonus…I tried on some other skinny pants for skinny days and they zipped, too. Wonders never cease.
Gail
Your day 4 outfit is gorgeous! Look at you, print ,mixing! The stripy tee and jeans will be so versatile throughout the summer. I laughed when you said about not wanting to look like your mom yet! Thanks for joining #WowOnWednesday hon.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, Gail, for the sweet words. I may be 61…61?…but not ready to dress like it! Or like my 92-year-old mom. She does rock some Alfred Dunner, though!
Chrissy
Oh I love your GYPO get up. And I laughed out loud at your bra comment. I didn’t even notice until you mentioned it. I have a you pictures where the angle made the girls look way off or way too low! Anyway, thank you for the smile sweet Leslie. By the way, both pairs of shoes you selected are perfect – love those flats and I wear my converse all the time!
Liz Klebba
Ooooh! I love me a good pattern mix! The stripes are so subtle they barely even count as a pattern… Darling look! I’d love a pair of tortoiseshell (faux, obvs) earrings, but they are just too darn warm for my verrry cool coloring. I saw a grey tone pair but didn’t snap them up when I saw them, now I’m out of luck. Sigh.
