Tasty Tuesday: Oh-So-Good Salisbury Steak

Hello, eaters!

Welcome to another edition of “Tasty Tuesday”. Posting here and on The Blended Blog because this recipe is just that good!! Sharing a super easy yet hearty and almost healthy Salisbury steak recipe. Best part, you can throw it in the crock pot and forget it for 8 hours. And have a delicious dinner ready when you are ready to eat!

But first, a little…

History

Before we get to the recipe, I wanted to know why it’s Salisbury steak and not salisbury steak. I was sure it would be something about this steak being first prepared centuries ago at some drafty manor in Salisbury, England. Wrong.

Guess what? This ground beef delicacy was actually invented? created? cooked up? by Dr. James H. Salisbury, a 19th century English/American physician (1823-1905). While serving as a doctor to soldiers during the Civil War, he created this chopped steak dish to alleviate the digestive ailments from which many of the troops suffered due to their army biscuit/hard tack diet. Salisbury (the man not the meat) was one of the first proponents of a low carb-high protein diet to promote general health and weight loss. [source]

Let’s Get Cooking

I can’t take credit for this recipe. Duh. You knew that already, huh? Cause I just got through saying Dr. James H. Salisbury invented it. But I can’t even take credit for this version of the good doctor’s ground meat dish. I can take credit for being smart enough to pin this recipe when I came across it on Pinterest. Thank you, Sidetracked Sarah.

Tasty Tuesday: Oh-So-Good Salisbury Steak

The Recipe

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef (or 1 pound ground beef, 1 pound ground turkey)
  • 1 envelope of onion soup mix
  • 1/2 cup Italian bread crumbs (or slice high-fiber bread, toasted and crumbled)
  • 1 egg (or egg white)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup flour (enough to dip your patties into)
  • 2 cans cream of mushroom soup or cream of chicken (I use fat free)
  • 1 package au jus mix (usually in the aisle with gravy, taco and other seasoning packets)
  • 3/4 cup water

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together ground meat, onion soup mix, bread crumbs, egg, and milk
  2. Form beef mixture into 8 patties
  3. Dust the patties lightly in flour
  4. Brown the patties on both sides
  5. Place the browned patties into the slow cooker, pyramid stack them so they fit
  6. In a medium bowl, whisk au jus into 3/4 cup water, add both cans of cream soup
  7. Pour the mixture over the patties

Cook on low for 4 to 6 hours (I’ve gone as long as 8 hours)

For my little family of two, I just divided the recipe in half to make 4 patties, I mean steaks.

Salisbury Steak: Dinner is Served

I boiled a few Yukon golds for mashed potatoes, warmed up some corn and dinner was served. Dove right in and was half-way finished when I remembered that I should probably have taken a picture. Ooops.

Tasty Tuesday: Oh-So-Good Salisbury Steak

We each had one 4 ounce steak, with a small ladle of the soup gravy and by my calculations that totals about 6 “Weight Watchers” points. If you are doing “21 Day Fix/Beachbody”, the Salisbury steak, itself, would be ok but the delicious gravy, eh, not so much.

Freezer Friendly

Although I haven’t tried it myself, this recipe is freezer friendly. Next time, maybe I will make the full recipe and freeze half. Here are the steps for freezing this Salisbury steak.

  • Follow steps 1-4 from the directions above for preparing the meat
  • Place browned patties into a gallon size Ziplock freezer bag
  • Follow steps 6-7 to prepare the gravy
  • Pour this mixture over the patties in the bag
  • Mix around, being sure to coat all the patties
  • Lay flat to freeze, to maximize freezer space
  • Label and freeze

Sounds simple enough. Going to try that.

Your Turn

So, do you have a favorite Salisbury steak recipe to share? Or maybe a crock pot dish we can give a go? Please comment below or link-up with us for this round of “Tasty Tuesday”.

Hope you will stop by The Blended Blog next Tuesday to see what Carrie’s cooking up. I know it will be delish.

With that, I bid you adios and bon appétit.

Hugs and kisses,

Isn’t that crazy that this Dr. Salisbury was ahead of his time with low carb eating.

I honestly wasn’t even sure what Salisbury steak was until this post! Haha. Now I know what it is AND it’s origins. It sounds quite good! I’m going to have to give it a try…especially since it’s a crockpot recipe!

Hope you will try this Salisbury steak recipe. It is really good! If I do say so myself!! Ha! But it isn’t my recipe just one I made. My daughter’s bf from Afghanistan loves Salisbury steak so when he visited recently, I made this recipe for him. He ate three helpings. Did my old heart good.

Please, please make this. I think you will love it. The kind of dish that tastes like you’ve been cooking all day when you really just threw some stuff in the crockpot and plugged it in. I just adore my crock pot. Thank you for saying you like when I share recipes. Maybe I should do it more often?
