Soup-Chili-Stew Recipe Swap & Blog Hop

Sweet Eaters and Readers,

Welcome to Tasty Tuesday and the second annual soup-chili-stew recipe swap and blog hop! Try saying that with your mouth full.

Whether you’re hungry or just like to eat, you’ve come to the right spot! More than a baker’s dozen-worth of bloggers have gathered together to share our favorite fall soup-chili-stew recipes with YOU! You lucky ducks. And with each other, of course. Before we get started today, you can check out last year’s recipes, here.

If you are hopping here from Bri’s blog at What’s Brewing with Bri, thank you!! Grab your apron and meet me in the kitchen. Let’s not waste another precious minute!

Let’s Get Cooking: Maple Bourbon Chili

One of the activities on my 2019 autumn bucket list was to try new chili recipes. Gimme a big green check mark on that one, girls. ✔️ I have tried 2 new chili recipes so far. And a stew recipe to boot. When I discovered Amanda’s maple bourbon chili recipe on Pinterest, my curiosity was piqued. Knew right away I had to try it. So glad I did.

I’ve always added brown sugar to my chili. Maple syrup sounded like an interesting alternative. And I’ve been known to add beer to chili and spaghetti sauce. Cooking wine to marinades and stews. So the bourbon in this recipe didn’t throw me off too much. Except we don’t drink bourbon! So it meant a trip to the liquor store.

Ingredients

FYI, I never make a recipe exactly and rarely make a recipe the same way twice. Same goes for this one. My suggestions are noted below.

  • 1 pound extra-lean ground beef (used 96% lean)
  • 1 medium yellow onion chopped (used about a half to accommodate PC’s tummy issues)
  • Half green pepper chopped (this is something I added that wasn’t in the original recipe - I always do that)
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1 (15 oz.) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (14.5 oz.) can petite diced tomatoes (we don’t like chunks of tomato so I pureed them)
  • 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup (used lite syrup)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese and fat-free/low-fat sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • Optional: Up to 1 cup of water I use 1/2 cup

So, if you and I have been hanging out for any length of time, you know how much I love my crockpot. Trying hard to have the same relationship with my Instapot but it hasn’t quite happened yet. We’re still in those awkward getting-to-know each other days. Because I usually like to cook my soup and chili and stew slowly throughout the day, I always use my crockpot for them. But this chili is different. It cooks up quickly on the stove in 30 minutes. And that might be even better!

Directions

You will need a large lidded soup pot or Dutch oven for this chili. Or maybe a deep frying pan with a lid.

  • Add the ground beef to a large soup pot over medium-high heat.
  • Break the beef apart as it browns.
  • Chop the onion and green pepper. Cook 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Beef should be cooked through.
  • Drain off any excess fat, if necessary.

  • Add the garlic, chili powder, cumin, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  • Cook 1 minute, stirring often.
  • Stir in the beans, tomatoes, tomato sauce and bring to boil.
  • Measure bourbon and maple syrup into measuring cup and add slowly to the mixture.

  • Return to a boil.
  • Add 1/2 to 1 cup of water, depending on how thick you like your chili.
  • Reduce heat to low and cover pot.
  • Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove from heat and allow the chili to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
  • Add a sprinkle of grated cheddar (we like Vermont cheddar) and a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt

My mouth is watering just thinking about this chili again. Oh, my goodness! It is so good. The bourbon adds such a rich, smoky flavor somehow. The syrup offers the perfect sweetness.

Thinking next time I might add a little cilantro to each bowl or a slice of avocado for the pop of green. Gotta love that color green.

This chili would be delicious with a hunk of corn bread, or even ladled over corn chips or tostadas. Hey, it would even be perfectly paired with brats or hot dogs to make chili dogs.

Nutrition

Amanda at The Wholesome Dish provided the nutrition information below with the original recipe.

Serving: 1 portion = 1/4 of the recipe | Calories: 354kcal | Carbohydrates: 41.2g | Protein: 28g | Fat: 4.4g | Saturated Fat: 2g | Fiber: 8.6g

By my calculations, each serving is worth about 7 Freestyle Weight Watchers points. And worth every one of them!

Please try the maple bourbon chili, Cindy. I think you and your PC will really like it. It isn’t that much different from any other chili recipe but just maybe more flavor!

This blog hop worked like a dream. Thank you so much for playing along with me.

Smokey maple flavor in chili sounds amazing. I’m going to have to pin this for later…or for an hour from now👩🏼‍🍳.

I felt the same way…very hungry…when I read all of these recipes. I can’t remember now who had the video with their recipe…oh, Sarah, but my stomach was growling so loudly at the sounds of her browning hamburger. Hope you will give this unique chili a try. It really is good.

I can never get enough soup. We have a restaurant here called Souper Salad and I could eat there all day long. They offer 4-5 types of soup, all you can eat, and each type is so good. Write up a post for your soup and link-up with us!! Share that recipe.

Hi, Leslie - A ‘Chilli Recipe Share’ is a perfect idea for this time of year. Including bourbon with the ingredients sounds divine! My favourite plant-based chilli is from Dr. Greger at Nutritionfacts.org. Healthy and delicious, the combination of red lentils, beans, mushrooms and spices tends to surprise and satisfy even those most suspicious of plant-based dishes. To make things simple, I replace the Umami with light soya sauce and the savoury spice blend with regular Italian seasoning. Works perfectly every time. I highly recommend it. https://nutritionfacts.org/recipe/three-bean-chili/

Oh, my gravy, your plant-based chili sounds delicious. I like lentils and in another life, cooked them regularly for my Panamanian husband. Long ago. Thank you for including the link. Going to check it out and pin it for future reference. The more beans the better as far as I am concerned!!

Hope you will give this maple bourbon chili a try. It doesn’t taste like maple syrup and bourbon, it tastes like a smokey, slightly sweet, hearty chili. I am hooked on it! But a buddy shared a pumpkin chili with pumpkin ale in the sauce and now I am anxious to try it!

Yum! I love chili in cold weather! I don’t even cook the meat ahead of time, just through it in my slow cooker raw and break it up a bit! I’ve never tried a sweetness in my chili like maple syrup or brown sugar but will have to next time. Thanks for the great idea! I showed this to my husband and he wants to make this recipe now. I think I will let him! Haha!

This sounds delicious - I would never have thought to add maple syrup to a chilli. Our twist on chilli is that we add a little grated plain dark chocolate into the mix - it has to be dark chocolate not milk! I like the fact this is ready so quickly, I will have to give it a try!

Oh, cocoa or dark chocolate in the chili sounds delicious. There is a Mexican dish called mole (mow-lay) that is a sauce or gravy served over chicken or used in burritos. It is made with chocolate, too. I absolutely love it. Such a unique flavor. Will try adding a little grated chocolate to my next batch of of chili. Thanks for the suggestion.
