Hello dollies,
Teaming up with Laura at The Horton Family for the last of her 3 Things posts until she brings them back again this fall. I love this series; you can read my other 3 things posts, here, here and here. Posts like these and Dee’s Short Story Prompt posts inspire me to write, which is really why I am blogging in the first place.
3 Things
- If April showers bring May flowers, what 3 kinds of flowers are you planting this spring? I could plant flowers all day long each spring but that would be the equivalent of sentencing them to a sure and painful death. Instead, I am planting succulents. After wanting them for a few years, I finally bought some pieces of talavera pottery to put in our rock garden around the pool. Pinched off some starters from a couple of plants growing around our Walmart Neighborhood Market. They are beginning to take off.
- Cinco de May, end of the school year, a long Memorial Day weekend. How are you celebrating the kick off to summer? We didn’t do anything for Cinco de Mayo, and the end of the school year doesn’t have much meaning for this old retired elementary librarian so that leaves Memorial Day weekend. I can think of no better way to kick off the summer than the Las Cruces, New Mexico Wine Fest that weekend.
Las Cruces is just down the road from El Paso. Several times we have driven over and spent the night then gotten up for the wine fest the following day. Hotel Encanto offers a special wine fest package. We really shouldn’t spend the money but we could sure use a little holiday!

- What 3 qualities make a great mom? Or, show us a picture of you and your mom and tell us why she is so special to you. A great mom is made up of a patchwork of qualities. I think 3 of the top qualities for a great mom would be limitless patience, boundless energy and unconditional love (and sense of humor but that would make it 4). My mom is special for many reasons. She is so intelligent, and funny, and has a way of engaging everyone in the room. Mom has exhibited limitless patience with me, has had boundless energy to keep up with 3 kids and now, a complex full of senior residents, most of whom she can call by name. And mom has shown me unconditional love even when I was most unworthy. The photo below was taken the day we made our Kentucky derbies together. I don’t remember what we were laughing about but just so thankful we were!
Your Turn
Have you participated in any of Laura’s 3 Things posts? If not, I would encourage you to keep them in mind when she reintroduces them this fall. For today, how would you respond to her questions for this month. What 3 qualities do you believe make a great mom?
I am finally beginning to make my way ’round to reading comments left here on my blog and reading posts and commenting on the blogs of all my buds. Tomorrow I hope to share part 2 of Caring for Mom as part of Penny’s Thinking Out Loud series. You can read part 1, here if you haven’t already. Next week, we will be sharing an update on our spring bucket lists. Yikes!! Really need to read over my list again. And the end of the month I hope to put together a special Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone post.
Sure appreciate the time you spend here with me. While I was AWOL, I contemplated whether the world would even notice if I never picked up blogging again. But here I am. And I hope you are still out there, too!
Hugs and kisses,

Thanks Leslie for mentioning my #ShortStoryPromptLinkParty! Party #5 is open as of tonight. I kill flowers too but if I were to plant any it would be sunflowers. I like your succulents! You look so much like your mom ♥

Thank you for saying I look like my mom. I always thought so but for a long time folks would say I looked like my dad. I need to go back and review the prompt for Short Story #5. Want to be sure to link up this time.

Ah I love posts like this that make me think a little more deeply about every day life. And I love succulents – well my hubby probably loves them a little more than me because he buys so many – then I tend to them! But we find in Western Australia they are pretty easy to grow. I don’t know three things about being a great Mum, I hope I have been relatively okay – I’m currently in England caring for my dear old Mum, who has been a wonderful Mum to me. Ps. I hope you find a great bra! Jo

Bless you for caring for your mum. Such a tough job, but a labor of love. I am tickled that your husband loves succulents so much. How cute that is! And then you care for them. Hmmm, great teamwork??
Dara
Patience is definitely something I need to work on as a mom!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Oh, Dara, I was terribly impatient with my daughters but I was so frazzled. No excuse, just truth.

I really need to participate in this in the fall! I keep forgetting!! 🙁 That wine fest sounds so fun! We actually have plans on Memorial Day weekend, I am excited. We’re going to a YMCA camp to celebrate Nathan’s (gasp) 13th birthday!!

Wow your Memorial Day plans sound fun! Will you camp-camp or stay in cabins? Is Aut going too? I would love to be able to rent an RV and camp just one more time!

I love that photo of you and your mother. What fun!
I planted 3 types of flowers this spring: geraniums, hostas and a new dwarf andromeda.
We’re kicking Memorial Day off this year with a week at the ocean. Can’t wait!
My mom unfortunately passed away when I was 28 years old. But that hasn’t stopped me from thinking about her every day. She was kind, considerate and non-judgmental. About me. But that never stopped her from gossiping about the neighbors. LOL!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Geraniums! Love their vivid color. So envious of your week at the ocean. Hope you are enjoying every salty moment. I am so sorry you lost your mama at such a young age.

I love how much you love your mom! You are such a good daughter. I love succulents, but don’t have much luck with them. I think I need to live in a hot, dry climate like yours. I love begonias for annuals. They grow very well for me and tolerate shade.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Oh, thank you! I do love my mom but she is easy to love. And everyone loves my mom!! With your gorgeous yard full of color and life, who needs succulents! You have everything else.
