Dearest readers and drinkers, sharing some smoothie recipes for Tasty Tuesday and joining my buddy Lauren at Shooting Stars Mag for her Glossies Made Me Do It series. For this link-up, participants share what magazines have inspired them to do or try.
And for me, that glossy was this 06.15.2020 edition of “First for Women” magazine which featured a cover article entitled “Easiest Detox Ever.”
I have been experiencing this heavy, clogged up feeling in my abdomen which I associate with not eating well, and not getting enough exercise. Was looking for a recipe for something that would help me get the gunk out of my gut. When I saw this magazine in the check out line at Walmart, it seemed to be calling my name.
Easiest Detox Ever
The article talks about celebrity nutritionist Haylie Pomroy’s 10-day detox that unclogs an overtaxed liver which then promotes the production of fat burning hormones.
Admittedly, I often feel like I live under a rock, or maybe a mountain? But I was not familiar with Pomroy until I read this article and followed that up with a search on her name. Learn more about her, here.
Pomroy says it’s so easy to detox your liver by following a few simple steps:
- eat breakfast within 30 minutes of waking in order to shift the liver from a state of rest to a fat-burning phase
- keep the liver fueled by eating every 3-4 hours
- fill up on meals that are largely built around vegetables, low-sugar fruits, protein and healthy fats
- avoid processed foods
- drink half your weight in water
Eat More
- grapefruit
- mushrooms
- sunflower seeds
- coconut oil
- eggs
- fennel
- turmeric
- and enjoy liquid snacks like tea and smoothies
Pomroy recommends this recipe for a detox smoothie.
- 1/2 cup mango
- 1/4 banana
- 3/4 coconut milk
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 Tbsp sunflower seeds
Blend until smooth. After reading this article, I decided to give detox smoothies a try.
Detox Smoothies on Pinterest
I haven’t used Pomroy’s exact recipe yet. Have the mango and turmeric in my Walmart grocery cart for a pick up order later this week.
In the meantime, we have been making smoothies from recipes I have pinned on Pinterest to my 21 Day Fix/Weight Watcher Recipes board. Came across this chart for picking and choosing ingredients for mixing green smoothies that actually taste good.
[source]
And we have even experimented with ingredients of our own.
Kale, baby spinach, cucumber, celery, mint, peaches, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. Chia seeds for protein. And we usually add water and ice. Sometimes pineapple juice or coconut water. Occasionally, a squirt of honey. But of course, we don’t put all of this into a single smoothie! We mix and match!
Smoothie a Day
PC has gotten on the bandwagon with this and suggested we make ahead some bags of smoothie ingredients to freeze for the week.
This morning he prepped 4 bags of various combinations of fruit and veggies.
When we make the smoothies, we will add a liquid and the chia or sesame seeds. And a sprinkle of turmeric.
How do they taste? Each one is a little different depending on the ingredients. Let me begin by saying PC doesn’t do vegetables well at all. Especially the green ones that are the best for us. And yet he is drinking these smoothies! The celery and cucumber (not my fave veggies) add refreshing flavors. Kind of like infused water. The fruit makes them slightly sweet. And the chia seeds thicken the smoothies to the consistency of a milkshake. I don’t notice the taste of the spinach or kale but my Prince does. When I add those leafy greens, I usually add a little honey to sweeten the smoothie.
How Do I Feel?
After about 10 days of drinking a smoothie day, I feel much less heaviness in my abdomen. There’s no longer the sensation of having gunk in my gut. And bonus…I am more, ahem, ‘regular’. We usually drink our smoothies after our morning workout and before we run. Some days I have coffee and a light breakfast afterward, other days the smoothie is my meal.
The smoothie below has celery, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, a banana, a tablespoon of chia seeds, some coconut water and a sprig of mint.
I think our bodies are definitely happier now that we are getting the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. That’s a great feeling. Bottoms up!!
Your Turn
Have you joined the smoothie drinking trend? If so, what do you add to yours? Have you noticed any improvements in the way you feel? Weight loss? Less gunk in your gut?
Hope you will drop by Lauren’s to check out her Glossies Made Me Do It post for the month. And maybe link up one of your own.
Please keep in mind, Wellness Weekend and the reveal of my summer bucket list both fall on Saturday, 06.21. Would love to have you create an summer activity list to share and write up a wellness post, too. Mind exercise is our optional theme for this month’s edition of Wellness Weekend. Hope to see you on Saturday!
Thank you for popping in. I have the week off from babysitting so hope to get the house clean, laundry and ironing caught up, and some crafting done. What’s on your agenda?
Hugs and kisses,
I had never heard of Pomroy either. Thanks for teaching me something today. Those smoothies look and sound delicious! I could drink a smoothie every day if only someone would make it for me. I love the make-the-bags-ahead-of-time idea.
We are really on the smoothie bandwagon – at least for now!! I think both of us feel better since starting to drink them. And we are certainly get better nutrients into our diet. We just use a cheap ole blender to make ours. I get kind of tired of washing the blender every day but it is worth it!
That actually doesn’t look too bad! Good job on sticking with it, Gabba.
Thank you, Lauren. I think you would like these, too!!
I’ve been wanting to try smoothies. I need to get more veggies and fruits in, and I think this would be the easiest way for me. Plus, I just like smoothies! That’s great PC even likes some of them – with veggies and everything!!!
Thanks for linking up with me this month. 🙂

If PC will drink these, anybody will!! He is pretty picky when it comes to veggies, especially. Hope you will give them a go. Try lots of fruit and a little bit of spinach or cucumber, some ice and chia seeds and a squirt of honey. Mmmm.
Hi Leslie, I always appreciate recommendations for healthy eating. The water issue is always a great reminder. I used to drink a great deal of water when I was leaving the house more with commuting and Bikram yoga. I am drinking significantly less water and my body is far more sluggish. All of your smoothy ingredients look healthy and delicious. A great post!
Thank you, Erica. I have days where I just can’t get my water in. And then other days where I drink a small river’s worth!
Loved your article!!! Hope you and PC are well. Praying we all get through all of this soon. Missing my daughters and grandkids as I am sure you are too. Stay safe. Hugs💖
Thank you, darling friend. We have stayed well so far. I just cannot believe this has gone on this long. Have you been able to see your babies and their babies at all? I am now helping Lauren with her babies since she has gone back to work. Cami has been locked up at home since she was born. They have brought her to our house twice now and the first time, she just cried and cried because she didn’t know where she was. I worry about our babies being away from other children, family members for so long.
While I always think other people’s smoothies look delicious, I’m not a smoothie drinker myself! I just don’t like the gloopy texture, but they really are a good way of getting your ‘5 a day’ quota of fruit and veggies. What a good idea to have the bags of ingredients all sorted out in advance so you just have to throw them in the blender each day.
Deb, I really didn’t think I could get PC on board with this but he has surprised me. You might try a smoothie with your favorite fruit and see if it is more tolerable. We add ice to ours and they are like a slushie or shaved ice.
I have been doing a low carb plan to get rid of the pandemic pounds COVID so graciously gifted me – ha! I don’t like that feeling of being weighed down my all the garbage so I always feel so much better when I get back to eating healthy again. Makes me wonder why I stray so easily in the first place. The smoothie I drink every morning is almond mile, 1/4 of an avocado, 1/3 cup berries, a few packets of stevia, and ice. It’s actually very tasty and creamy!
xo,
Kellyann
I have heard of using avocado in smoothies. Even bought 2 to try but haven’t done it yet. Might have to sneak that in on PC. He closely monitors the addition of spinach to our smoothies!
I ask myself the same thing when I start getting carried away with eating junk. Why? When I feel so much better when my clothes fit, when I don’t have all that junk in my trunk. For me, eating is a way of ‘dealing’ with stress…a very poor way. But I am an emotional eater. Thank goodness we have been exercising or I would be big as a house.
I make these quite often. You’ve given me an idea on how to have them every day now by prepping!!
Yay!! It was actually PC’s idea to make the bags ahead of time. Our fruit was going bad so quickly and he came up with that idea so we could freeze the fruit and keep it from spoiling. We are really enjoying these smoothies and our quiet time on the patio together.
I really like smoothies! I normally just make strawberries, yogurt, and milk, but I’d like to try more vegetable ones!
Dara, throw a little spinach or cucumber or celery in with your strawberries and yogurt and milk. You will hardly notice the veggies but they make the smoothies even healthier.
I love smoothies. I have been making them more often lately too. The immersion blender makes it so much quicker and easier. But today, I was terrible. All total today I ate four or five s’mores pop-tarts. Yep. Thank you to my husband for buying those. (sarcasm) So now I get to have food guilt…
I love s’more Pop Tarts!! Haven’t had one in awhile. They are 7 Weight Watcher points and that was generally more than I wanted to eat for breakfast. But I love them! That naughty husband of yours to buy them!!
I LOVE smoothies. I do the FASTer Way and they had a Smoothie reset last week and they gave us smoothie recipes for 5 days and I think you had 2 smoothies a day with a light lunch and dinner. I didn’t do it, because planning all that during the summer with 2 kids home does not sound like something I have time to even think about… but, I may do it in the fall since they gave a print out for it.

Would love to see the recipes the FASTer Way shared with you. We both feel better since we began drinking these in the morning. I feel better knowing that we are getting veggies and fruit in every single day. I don’t have that heavy feeling in my stomach. And I feel full after drinking a smoothie. Ha! Who knew!
I too like the make the bags ahead of time. I got a blender a couple years ago to make smoothies, made several then didn’t make anymore. I could drink them everyday if someone made them for me like Laurie mentioned.
LOL, girl!! You and Laurie made me laugh. It really makes it easier to make up the smoothie bags ahead of time. Maybe even buying frozen fruit. Then you can dump some frozen pineapple in, some frozen blueberries, throw in a frozen banana and a handful of frozen baby spinach…ta-da, you are done!!
