Good morning, good evening, good night, my friends. Thanks for joining me for Sentence a Day 08.2024 – a long-winded review of my August in one run-on sentence a day.
As I have always said, I write these sentences for me. As a way of keeping track of what all has happened and when. I know this is really a lot of gibberish. A bunch of stuff I really don’t expect anyone to wade through!! But it helps me to reflect on each day, and record the important things so I can keep them straight, if not in my mind, on ‘paper’ at least. So, with that being said, please know you are free from any expectation that you need to read every word.
Sentence a Day & OGT
Every month I try very hard to get my SaD post together, in order to make the What’s Been on Your Calendar? link-up with Deb at Deb’s World, Sue who blogs at Women Living Well After 50, Donna from Retirement Reflections and Jo who can be found at And Anyways, which opens on the last Friday of each month. But the last day of the month isn’t always the last Friday, so I never seem to make the What’s Been on Your Calendar link-up!! I am always adding sentences through the last day of the month, whatever day that falls on.
Just a reminder: Once Upon a Time & Happily Ever After occasionally uses affiliate links which are usually italicized. If you click or make a purchase from an italicized link provided I may receive a very small commission at no cost to you. Thank you for your support.
And you can find where I link-up on this page.

1 Sec Each Day
Here is a quick video clip of much of what has happened since my last SaD post. August was a very good month until it wasn’t!! I jinxed myself on 08.19 when I said life was going so well.
2024 Word of the Year (WOTY)
My word of the year has lighten (up) has only crossed my mind a few times in August. But we have had a very good month so I haven’t felt bogged down by life. The need to lighten up wasn’t really there.
PC had been officially retired almost a month as I type this sentence. By the time this post goes live, it will have been 5 weeks since his last day at work. I am pleasantly surprised at how well retirement is going. Now and then there are times when I miss being home alone for a bit, but right now Paul is at baseball practice (10:00 am on a Thursday) and I have some down time to read and work on blogs.
My house is pretty well a mess. But we are going to start a big spring cleaning early this fall. Ha!! We are going to Tennessee and Ohio this coming Sunday for a week, and then we plan to hit the housecleaning and projects pretty hard when we get back. It is difficult to want to clean the garage or pumice the pool tiles in 100+* heat. Surely, it will cool off in a week or two. All of this to say, I have been able to lighten up about housekeeping and worrying over kitty fur and dust bunnies.
I am wearing my little white beaded bracelet everyday, too. Using it to remind me to take my troubles to God. But more importantly, to remind myself how very thankful I need to be for this great life. For all the good things. We are smiling over here these days.
Update
**Wrote this part before my accident in Ohio. Things have become significantly ‘heavier’ since 08.29.2024. Trying not to get frantic about my broken foot and the question marks about what the next months look like but that hasn’t always been easy.
A Few OOTDs
Most days you’ll find me in some kind of active wear, if I am going to just be at home. We have upped our exercise game this month so I have been in shorts every day. But for volunteering, errands and church, here are a few of the outfits I have put together.
- tiered, white, eyelet sundress from Amazon, here
- foldable, straw, wide-brimmed beach hat with 50+ UPF/UV protection from Amazon, here
- Loft paisley, tie back, yoked top in pink, pale purple and gray-blue, here
- Loft puffy sleeved top with smocked detailing, similar and Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda shorts in white from Belk, here
- It’s a Beautiful Day for Learning graphic tee, here, from Amazon
Your Turn
Are you ready to transition from summer to fall? I am!! Will be getting out my fall decorations as soon as we get home from TN-OH. Bring on the cooler temps, the pumpkin everything, sweaters and fall colors.
Wishing you a peaceful week. What do you have on your calendar for September? I hope our calendar is wide open!!
Thank you for popping by to spend a few minutes with me. Off to read blogs and to stop by to see YOU.
**Suddenly, my September looks a little different than I had hoped it would. My foot is broken in several places and in several pieces and cannot be repaired by surgery so we are hoping it will repair itself. Will be in a removable boot for 8 weeks but cannot put any weight on the foot during that time. Might be doing a whole lot of reading, writing and blogging!!
Hugs and kisses,
Marsha Banks
What a lovely month you had, Leslie…until the mishap! I’m glad you got lots of good visiting in before it happened. I’m hoping all goes well when you make it to the orthopedic doc. Isn’t Under the Bridge something? I was reading the book, but my loan expired and I need to put it on hold again so I can finish it. The book, as usual, is lots different from the show.
I cannot believe Declan is in a big boy bed already! Wow, it seems like only yesterday, right? Your family is so beautiful!

Thank you so much, Marsha. I love my family dearly. Hope your children spoiled Nigel rotten with their love and excellent care while you were away. Brennyn is working on potty training Declan and he is more often than not, pant-less!! Love Facetiming with them and seeing the brown biscuit behind running all over the house.
Wonder if I should read Under the Bridge, too? The series really disturbed me, though. So maybe I should just leave well enough alone. I have such nightmares when I watch these dreadfully upsetting shows. And yet there isn’t a whole lot more out there to watch with all of our options!!
Deb
It was all going so well until right at the very end 🙁
I felt a sense of foreboding as I was reading the beginning of the post – everything was lovely but I knew that as the days went past, disaster was brewing.
I can understand your thoughts about getting a second opinion, but think you must be prepared for 8 weeks of rest, it’s important that everything heals well (no pun intended!)
Take care x

LOL, I just love that you always make me smile. I think I have overdone it some this week so today I am being a very good girl and taking it easy. I just detest being more or less bedridden. Not a good patient at all. I have grumbled that I jinxed myself when I said everything was going so well in our lives. That will teach me!!
Joanne
That is crazy that some lady was rifling through your stuff on the beach. How sweet to be surrounded by butterflies on such a poignant anniversary day. Right up until your accident at the ball game things were sounding really wonderful. I am so glad that you both have been enjoying retirement together. I did on Instagram that they don’t think there is much of anything they can do for your foot but I really hope it heals well enough that with a bit of PT you will gain full use of it again.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you!! I thought it was crazy that someone would have the nerve to fish through our belongings on the beach. Pretty gutsy!!
Oh, we had such a good summer…you are right…right up to the foot!! Crazy how things happen. I was worried what the first months of PC’s retirement would look like and that was taken care for us!! Ha! Glad he is retired because I would have struggled the first week or so home by myself. I am sure this wasn’t what he had in mind though.
They are saying PT is in my future and probably surgery for the joint but right now I am just hoping to get full mobility back and get on the hiking trails again. Thank you, friend.

I am sooo sorry about your foot. I get so frustrated when I can’t do things for myself, do you? I will pray that your foot heals well and heals quickly!! Can you float in your pool or is it in a cast?

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. My foot is in a boot so I have been tempted to get back in the pool on my float but haven’t tried yet. Maybe next weekend. It is still swelling somewhat so I do a little bit – cleanning, scrapbooking, laundry, cooking, then I sit with ice on it. Hope the swelling is gone by this time next week.

I’m so sorry to hear about your foot and so glad you won’t need surgery… but, still I am sure it is hard to limp around and I know you’re a busy body and very active, so it has got to be hard. Maybe it is your time to slow down a bit. I’m glad to hear his retirement is going well and you still get some time home alone, it sounds like baseball keeps him busy (and active). I am sure those swims are relaxing. Glad you got some family trips in too!

Leslie – so sorry about your broken foot! I was going to say, “you just can’t catch a break” but then again…I guess you did! Ugh. (sorry about that!) I hope you are getting used to the crutches and that you will be keeping up with your retired, lovin life husband soon. I had to laugh when you said on his first full day of retirement at home….he mopped!! (Way to go, girlfriend!) The kiddos look great going back to school and congrats to Valerie as well!! Oh, and cheesy grits sound amazing!!!

Sorry about the foot. It can’t be easy to take a step back and rest when you are such an active person. Looks like you had a brilliant August. Love you sentiment about the butterflies.

You must have slammed your foot very hard! It’s good you can use the removable boot in order to shower. That was hard for me when I had the permanent cast on. I hope it isn’t hurting to much now. I did see a big difference from the very beginning after I fell till when I was just waiting to be able to walk again – it got quite annoying but didn’t hurt till I actually did start walking on it!

Oh gracious, Ouch! Sorry to hear about your foot. I’m hoping for a quick recovery for you. I enjoyed reading about the butterflies. The beach days & pool days are sure good ways to enjoy the last bits of summer.
