Hello, pinners and crafters and DIYers,
Welcome to the February Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by Erlene at My Pinterventures. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and YOU too) to not just pin, but to make it happen! This month, I chose to make DIM Did It Myself Poo Pourri spray Have you heard of Poo Pourri or maybe even used it at your house? My daughter Brennyn introduced our family to this miracle worker and we haven’t turned back since.
We have cans of other air fresheners in our bathrooms at home but Poo Pourri is different. Because it works differently. It’s a before you go freshener sprayed directly into the toilet ahead of time…if you get my drift. It creates a layer of film on the top of the water that traps odor under the surface. So it’s not ever released into the air. But don’t take my word for it, read more here on the official Poo Pourri site. Then hurry back so we can make some together!
DIM, Did It Myself: Pinspired Poo Pourri
I had been trying to decide on a project for this month’s Pinterest Challege when there was a little divine intervention in the online order pick up line at JC Penney’s.
And if that wasn’t hint enough…how ’bout this…
an industrial strength hint!
I don’t have to be hit in the head to recognize a powerful suggestion when I see one. So, DIM, Did It Myself Poo Pourri, it was! Here’s how I made it.
Supplies
The pinspiration for this project came from this pin by Hip2Save. Please take a moment to visit that pin because the original pinner shares some darling tags you can add to your homemade poo pourri. I didn’t feel that it would be right for me to print her labels and add them to my spray, though, to share with you.
- small spray bottle(s) – I used 2 ounce bottles
- distilled water – I used the filtered water from my frig
- 1/2 tablespoon rubbing alcohol per 2 ounces
- 25 drops essential oil – I used 50, ha!
Guess I follow poo pourri recipes about as well as I do recipes for everything else. As far as the essential oil goes, I figured the more the merrier. If 25 drops is good, heck, 50 drops is even better!
Directions
- add 1/2 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol to bottle
- fill bottle with distilled water, leaving a little room at the top to be able to shake to mix contents
- add drops of essential oil, I used 25 drops of peppermint and 25 drops of eucalyptus
- screw on top of spray bottle and shake well
- last of all, as the folks at Charmin say: sit back, relax and enjoy the go!

Your Turn
Have you ever used Poo Pourri? Apparently it comes in a variety of fragrances and can be purchased JC Penney. Or for pennies, you can make your own like I did. According to this article about the 12 best bathroom air fresheners at Bustle.com, Poo Pourri comes in second. With the extra drops of essential oil I put in mine, I bet it might come in first!

Have a peaceful weekend, friends! We are forecast to get snow tonight and tomorrow morning…WHAT? And again toward the end of the week and Saturday. Not sure that groundhog knew what he was doing earlier this month.
Thank you for spending a few moments here with me.
Family hugs,
Kellyann Rohr
I love Poo Pourri! I tried making it once and I think it went ok but then I dropped the ball and bought it agian. My husband bought a giant refill bottle of it on Amazon. We love the stuff!
xo,
Kellyann
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Wow, industrial size refill of Poo Pourri on Amazon, huh? I need to check that out. Might make great stocking stuffers for all the guys!
Gail
You clever old thing, making a pot pourri (as we call it here). I remember when I was a kid going to a Tudor museum and smelling this gorgeous fragrance as we went inside the house – it was genuine pot pourri, made with rose petals in the way the Tudors made it.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Oh, I know the Tudor recipe for pot pourri must be delightful. This poo pourri is strictly for spraying in the potty before you use it. I imagine back in the days of the Tudors, without current day cleaning products, deodorants, soaps, pot pourri was a necessity.
Gail M Griffin
Leslie, this is the sweetest post ever! You make masking odors hilarious! Believe it or not, I first saw Poo Pourri years ago at an ACMoore and wondered why, why, why at a craft store! I love it but think it’s overpriced! Now, I see knock-offs in the dollar store and even Walmart. And I can’t believe it just takes essential oil, alcohol and distilled water to duplicate! Thanks for giving us a homemade alternative to a wonderful product!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Oh, Gail, I agree Poo Pourri is pricey. But their little spray bottles are so cute. I think we could mix up our own spray and pour it into their cute bottles! Ha!
Dara
So, did it work?
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Yup, my poo pourri worked and is much cheaper to make than to buy!!
Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom
Haha! I did a blog campaign for Poo Pourri and I still have some left! It is great to have on hand! LOL. I love how you can DIY your own!!

Love that you did a blog campaign for Poo Pourri. I know it was beautifully done. Kellyann says that industrial size refills are available on Amazon. That might make it cheap enough that it wouldn’t pay to make your own.
Jenny
I’ve never heard of this, but it sounds great to have. That’s awesome you can dIY it!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
It makes a great stocking stuffer, this Poo Pourri spray. Might keep it mind for the holidays. You could mix up a big batch!!
Rebecca Jo
The Master Crapsman… HAHAHAHAHA… that’s hilarious!!!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
I thought Master Crapsman was funny, too!!
Donna
Hi, Leslie – You are very talented and your energy is inspiring. I have never heard of Poo Pourri before. I learn a great deal from this blog! 🙂
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Ha, Donna, thank you! This imitation Poo Pourri is easy to make and so much more affordable than the real thing. I have a couple of empty bottles of the original commercial Poo Pourri, which are really cute, thinking I could refill them with my homemade spray.
Mother of 3
I’m not great at following directions either and I would have added more scent too. Pinned.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Who has time for directions!??? Glad I am not the only one who wings it. Thank you for pinning my recipe for poo pourri!
ShootingStarsMag
I’ve never used the actual Poo Pourri, but that’s awesome you were able to make your own. I love that you doubled the essential oil amount! LOL
-Lauren
Leslie Roberts Clingan
We need extra strength in our poo pourri over here. Probably should have tripled the drops of essential oil! But might get so thick it wouldn’t spray. Ha!
Pili
It’s great you can make your own, that way you can use the essencial oils you like most. Thanks for sharing the how to.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
I like the homemade version of the poo pourri for that reason…I can select the essential oils/fragrance we like best. Nothing better than mint and eucalyptus. Mmmm. That fragrance can obliterate anything else!
Crissy
I’m sure your poo pourri would come in first, Leslie! What a cute idea to make your own. I never would’ve thought of that! Love it!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you Crissy. My homemade version of Poo Pourri smells good and is so much more inexpensive. That real stuff is kind of pricey but the bottles are really cute. Mixing up your own spray and adding it to their bottles would be a win-win.
Debbee
I’ve heard of it but thought it was a gimmick. Will have to try it!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Poo Pourri is the real deal. And a bit expensive. Making it, and adding the essential oils you like best, is much cheaper. Make a great gift…for the guys at Christmas!
Lauren | Mom Home Guide
I never knew that Poo Pourri really works! I might try making this – it’s probably healthier to use this than those spray room fresheners in the bathroom.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
I bet this is homemade air freshener is much healthier. The commercial stuff like Glade seems so dense. Not sure what is in there but it hangs like a cloud when you spray it. This homemade Poo Pourri is very light. But it is made to be sprayed directly into the water, too.
Shirley Wood
While doing Stocking Stuffer research last year at Christmas, I discovered that Poo Pourri is at the top of the list for ideas to put in stockings! Who knew! Now we can just make our own. Your recipe is really easy to follow.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
I am thinking we could even fill our empty Poo Pourri bottles with homemade spray. Their spray bottles are so cute.
Erlene
It’s funny that this type of spray is coming back. We used to use a Japanese version over 30 years ago, but I think the new versions are better. I actually have poo pourri in our bathrooms, so I’ll definitely be trying out the DIY version to save some $$. Pinned.
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you for pinning Erlene. Wonder what the Japanese version of Poo Pourri uses for fragrance? The real Poo Pourri is kind of expensive but the bottles are cute. I am thinking I could mix up my own and pour it into my empty Poo Pourri bottles.
Erlene
I have no idea what was in the Japanese ones, but they were in small purse sized squeeze bottles and we would carry them when I was in high school.
Erin
What a fun DIY project! Love it!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Fun and an inexpensive alternative to the real Poo Pourri, which is kind of $$.
Amy
I have never heard of this before. I guess I’ve been living under a rock. How does it work?
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Poo Pourri and my DIY knock off both work well. You spray them in the water before using the toilet. It traps odors with a film of essential oil on the top of the water. Really nice to carry in your purse or have in your guest bathroom. My daughter introduced me to it!
Marci
Your post is hilarious! Seriously, though, I had no idea you could make your own poo pouri! Since I enjoy making soap, bath salts, lotion and beard balm, there are gobs of essential oils in my stash. Thank you for the great idea! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Wow, so impressed that you make soap and lotion and bath salts. I really enjoy having different soaps to use in the shower. We buy 4-5 bars at a time from a little store in the mountains of New Mexico. Would enjoy learning how to make them myself. So many great craft projects, so little time. Glad my post made you smile.
Lynne
What a great idea to make your own! I never would have thought of that!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Thank you, Lynne, for stopping by and checking out my homemade poo pourri! Best thing about making it yourself is you can choose your own fragrance.
Emily
I have only seen poo pouri in the stores but I have ignored them since most things on the market for home and personal care, fragrance, cleaning, candles, lotions, etc… all have stuff my daughter is highly allergic to. So I have to make most things we use. There are a few essential oils she isn’t allergic to that I can use, so I’m adding this to my list next time I make our home care products!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
Oh, Emily, how difficult for your daughter and YOU! I am glad that maybe you can use this recipe for homemade poo pourri with essential oils your daughter can tolerate. Bless your hearts. Thank you for stopping by.
Julie
This kind of product only appeared on the shelves here in the UK a few years ago but I know a few people who could really do with some.
I love the idea of making it yourself, especially now I know it’s so easy! Thanks.
Habiba
Leslie, as always I am in love with your way of writing. As if I were talking with my best friend. I never heard of poo pouri but you have hooked. I will give this a go – all I Need is some rubbing alcohol. Up on my list it goes… And I think this post would have made for a wonderful wonderful sponsored post! Maybe you could use it to apply for another topic. Brand will love your way of story telling. That I am sure of!!!
Leslie Roberts Clingan
You are so kind, sweet Habiba. Thank you for the words of encouragement and support. Hope you will try the homemade poo pourri. Sure is a whole lot cheaper than the commercial stuff. And you can make it using your favorite essential oils, which I like best of all.
Thank you for the dear compliments about my writing. Music to these old ears. I really only blog as a vehicle to write. So glad you enjoy my writing style.
