Sweet mothers and others,
I have dropped the ball on this post! Should have been up yesterday before bed but we went to the El Paso Chihuahuas baseball game and I just plain forgot! So scrambling now to get this out to you so you can enter our Mother’s Day giveaway!!
Poem in Your Pocket Day
Yesterday was “Poem in Your Pocket” day. I heard it on the news and dismissed it. Ha! But then started remembering how my grandmother (and maybe yours?) carried poems in her purse or tucked away in her Bible or books. So I decided to celebrate, if a day late, here with you.
Here’s a bit of explanation about “Poem in Your Pocket” day from Poets.org.
On this day, select a poem, carry it with you, and share it with others at schools, bookstores, libraries, parks, workplaces, street corners, and on social media using the hashtag #pocketpoem.
Poem in Your Pocket Day was initiated in April 2002 by the Office of the Mayor in New York City, in partnership with the city’s Departments of Cultural Affairs and Education. In 2008, the Academy of American Poets took the initiative to all fifty United States, encouraging individuals around the country to participate. In 2016, the League of Canadian Poets extended Poem in Your Pocket Day to Canada.
And check out this little video that illustrates how touched library patrons, hospital patients, new friends on the street were with the gift of a poem. Poetry has that magical impact on people.
A Poem for Your Pocket
As an early Mother’s Day gift and in honor of “Poem in Your Pocket” day, albeit a day late, I share with you this poem by Jayne Sena, that I found here, on Family Friend Poems.
What I Would Do For You
~Jayne Sena
I would do just about anything you’d ask,
For you there’s nothing I wouldn’t do, there’s no such task.
I would walk without my shoes to the end of the Earth,
I would give up anything I had to, to teach you self worth.
I would hold your hand every minute of every day,
But I won’t because I know you need to find your own way.
I would surely bear the heartache of your first love that’s real,
Even though I can’t, I will naturally feel as you feel.
I would sell my soul if it would keep you happy forever,
I would give my right arm to keep us forever together.
I would run a hundred miles up-hill in the rain,
Just to guarantee that you will never feel pain.
I would laugh with you even if I was sad,
I will give you a smile even if I’m mad.
I can only accept your mistakes with a grin on my face,
I will guide you in correcting them, but at your own pace.
I will guide you through life, as this world can get quite wild,
Just don’t you ever forget that you will always be my child.
If you are a mommy, grandmother, aunt, or responsible pet owner, I bet you’ve felt at least one of these emotions for the babies in your life. You can print the poem, here, to share with someone you love or to tuck into your own pocket.

Here’s my little poem, I say to myself, each & every night:
Thank you Lord for this comfy bed
And the roof above my head.
Every day a hot shower and 3 meals I’m fed.
Thank you Lord for this homestead.
If all of the above is present in your life, you have a really GREAT life.

I loved poetry as a child. I think it takes the right teacher to introduce and instill a love of poetry in children. Whether that teacher be a parent or someone at school. Hope you entered the giveaway. Are you still working?
Linda
